Editorial design on Southern California's Programmatic and Modernist architecture — buildings that mimic something else, like a doughnut shop shaped like a doughnut. That idea also echoes Simulacron-3, a sci-fi novel excerpted throughout the book that imagines reality as a layered simulation. AI-generated content and ASCII textures carry that same logic into the book's design, blurring the line between real and simulated.
I intentionally let the letters bleed off the edge, aiming to force the reader to interact with the physical form of the book. This adds a clash between the rigid editorial design and the glitchy computational texture the book owns.
The hacker-generated visual texture was created with the use of ASCII online generators. However, the images were selected after a visual research from the books California Crazy and Deco Landmarks: Art Deco Gems of Los Angeles.
